SEATTLE Nov. 20 — The University of Washington suspended an assistant
professor from using animals in research for violations such as allegedly
cutting the tips of mouse tails without anesthesia.

Under university rules, professors who plan to use animals in an
experiment must submit an application to the university's Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committee detailing each step. Animal-care staffers
monitor the animals and report concerns to the committee.
