It's been a year since chronic wasting disease reared its ugly head in

Two captive elk at two farms were found with the fatal brain disease,
sparking a statewide search to determine if it is present in Minnesota's
wild deer herd.

The Department of Natural Resources tested samples from nearly 5,000
hunter-killed deer last year, and none had the disease.
Officials are dependent on hunters to bring their deer to registration
stations where samples can be taken. Last year, DNR wildlife officials
didn't get as many samples as they wanted.

As an incentive this fall, hunters who bring their deer for testing will
have a chance to win one of about 20 rifles, shotguns, bows and
muzzleloaders donated by the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, the
Bluffland Whitetails Association and various outdoor stores.
