Alleged cockfighting ringleader jumps bail
Daily Journal Staff Report
November 4, 2003
The coastside man accused of running a cockfighting
operation jumped bail and a $50,000 arrest warrant has
been issued.
Miguel Huerta Acosta, 47, was out on a $10,000 bond
and scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to set a
jury trial date. When Acosta did not appear,
Commissioner Susan Greenberg ordered a bench warrant
for his arrest.
Acostas attorney Armando Garcia scheduled time
yesterday for Acosta to surrender, but he failed to
appear once again.
Additional felony charges of jumping bail could
potentially be added to Acostas case, said Chief
Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Acosta, of El Granada, was arrested Sept. 19 in the
300 block of Bridgepoint Drive in El Granada after
sheriffs deputies armed with a search warrant turned
up dozens of roosters, thousands of dollars in cash
and other fighting-related items.
The 39 roosters, which had their combs and bodies cut
for fighting, were confiscated and euthanized. Acosta
is charged with misdemeanors for training an animal
for fighting, owning a game cock and the failure to
care for an animal. He has pleaded not guilty to all
counts.
