KOLKATA: Rehabilitation centres for rescued leopards and circus animals. This
novel venture is a part of the state forest department’s plans for the Forest
Week beginning November 6.
To begin with, the state is setting up a rehabilitation centre at Karibari in
Jalpaiguri.
The estimated cost for the project is Rs 1 crore.
“Four rescued leopards, now at the Jaldapara Reserve Forest , will be
released there. Later, it will accommodate the animals rescued from circus as well,”
said Vinod Kumar Yadav, conservator and deputy warden, wildlife.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals PETA) has moved the Supreme
Court against the Empire Circus, complaining that elephants are shackled by
three legs, horses tied with short ropes and cockatoos confined to cages without
a perch.
Most of the leopards have been rescued from the tea gardens. “We have rescued
as many as 20 leopards from the gardens. They stray into the tea gardens in
the forest fringes,” Yadav informed.
An ‘interpretation centre’ is coming up at Lataguri to make people aware of
the endangered species and the laws governing them. Another eco-tourism centre
will be inaugurated at the Burirdabri Tiger Reserve in the Sunderbans on
November 7.
The department will also run an awareness campaign on what the villagers can
do to prevent elephants from straying into human settlements.
It can truly be said: Men are the devils of the earth, and the animals are
the tormented souls. --Arthur Schopenhauer
