More than 350 events were held in all 50 states and 20 other countries for the 20th anniversary observance of World Farm Animals Day.

Featured events were video screenings and 'cage-ins,' a form of street theater, where activists sit in cages to dramatize confinement of animals in factory farms. Large festivals in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, Charlottesville, and Washington, DC, treated tens of thousands to entertainment, vegan food, cooking demos, lectures, videos, and educational materials.

More traditional events included street theater, vigils, fasts, pickets, marches, exhibits, leafleting, in-formation tables with graphic photo displays and, marches. KFC outlets became a frequent target, in collaboration with PETA's KFC campaign. Thousands of WFAD leaflets and Why Vegan and Try Vegetarian booklets were distributed.

Proclamations recommending that animals raised for food be treated humanely, that farming practices protect our natural resources, and that our food supply be safe and wholesome were issued by 21 governors and mayors. Hundreds of billboards and bus display cards in Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Houston, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and San Diego carried the message to thousands of commuters. Additional millions were reached through scores of press releases, letters to the editors, and radio and TV spots. The nationally syndicated Mutts comic strip ran a six-day series on the plight of farmed animals.
