Vegans are weighing in on childhood obesity, saying schools could help
trim American children's girths by cutting meat and dairy products from
school lunches.

A tiny contingent of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals stood
outside the state Capitol Thursday, blaming the U.S. Department of
Agriculture for bowing to commercial pressure in promoting fattening
school lunch menus.

"The USDA, through its meat-and-dairy school lunch program and
meat-industry-influenced 'Food Guide Pyramid,' is directly contributing to
childhood obesity and the diseases associated with it," PETA Director
Bruce Friedrich said in a statement Thursday.
