October is Domestic Violence month and a local group is forming to focus
on one of the lesser known victims of domestic violence and abuse: pets.
The Central Arizona Animal Cruelty Task Force will hold its first meeting
at 10 a.m. on Oct. 28 at the Housing Authority meeting room, located at
970 N. Eleven Mile Corner Road.
While not taking away from the importance of human domestic violence
victims, Jon Thompson, Central Region director of the Pinal County Adult
Probation Office, said the group will address the issue of pets, who are
often victims as well. He said members of local veterinary clinics, Pinal
County Animal Control, police departments, the Pinal County Sheriff's
Office, the County Attorney's office, and interested citizens are welcome
to attend.

"These guys use children and animals as bargaining chips to keep their
wives in check," Thompson said, explaining that the task force would
coordinate the efforts of government and citizens to help out crimes
against animals as well as people. "There has been a lot of positive
response from the public and private sectors. People think it's a good idea."
