The ad below ran in this week's (October 11, 2003) edition of Lancaster Farming, a weekly farm & agriculture newspaper based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (known as the puppy mill capitol of the east). Each week Lancaster Farming runs dozens of ads for puppies for sale and "puppies wanted." The majority of them are ads by Amish or Mennonite breeders.

"Greyhound puppies & young racing stock from some of the top racing bloodlines in the world. Get into Greyhound racing or lure coursing & make a difference! Hevener Farms. 717-664-5089. Serious buyers only please, these pups are top of the line." 

AND:

"Beautiful Collies from one of the oldest kennels in PA. Call us for puppies, breeding or show stock. 717-664-5089."

An internet search brought up a web site for Ron Hevener, self-proclaimed artist, writer, musician, horse fancier and dog breeder. I called the number and got Ron himself on the phone. He said he was a spokesperson for the American Greyhound Racing organization, blah, blah, blah.I said "There's no dog racing in Pennsylvania" and he replied,  "Well, not yet!!" I asked about the cruelty involved and why would he breed when so many Greyhounds are killed at the tracks, etc. Hevener tried to convince me that dog racing was a "wonderful sport and not cruel at all. Oh, heavens, no!"

Here's a little quote from his Bio on his website:
"Mr. Hevener is National Spokesman for the Greyhound Racing Association of America, organized to promote the sport of Greyhound racing and to protect the racing dogs that make this great sport possible."
