"The Greatest Show on Earth" is a trademark, but it's also a reality every
time the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus comes to town.
...
Animals are central to this circus, and animal-rights protesters regularly
appear outside. The circus maintains a center for elephant conservation
and feels that drawing attention to endangered species educates and makes
conservationists out of its vast audience. Sara, "the tiger-whisperer,"
must have been under a lot of pressure after her senior colleague Roy Horn
was mauled in Las Vegas earlier this month; there is a full-page ad for
Siegfried & Roy in the souvenir program. But the golden-tressed performer
doesn't seem fazed in the least by appearing in a cage with nine tigers,
including Tora, one of 12 snow-white tigers known to be in existence, and
she gets them to sit up and beg and even play hopscotch. Sara also works
with the elephants, one of which does a handstand.
