PLEASANTON -- As federal authorities examined remnants from an explosion
at Shaklee Corp.'s offices Friday, they opened the second bomb
investigation in the Bay Area within a month involving a company accused
of ties to animal testing.
...
Pleasanton-based Shaklee prides itself on avoiding animal testing. The
company sells vitamins, personal hygiene products and home cleaners and is
listed on the "caring consumer" Web site of People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals. The site lauds Shaklee as a company that doesn't
test products on animals.

But its parent company, Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. of Japan, is the
target of a worldwide campaign by radical activists who accuse it of
contracting with a company that does test on animals, research firm
Huntingdon Life Sciences.

It is the same company whose practices were spotlighted by extremists
after the Emeryville attack.
