AR-News: (US) Animal-rights activists propose sterilizing bears

TRENTON -- Trying to head off the first state-sanctioned bear hunt in
three decades, an animal rights group on Thursday pushed a plan to
chemically sterilize bears.

Calls for the scheme come three months before the start of a hunt expected
to cull at least 500 bears. Calling it inhumane, animal-rights activists
are currently suing the state to end the hunt.

According to Stuart Chafietz, special projects coordinator for the New
Jersey Animal Rights Alliance, 100 bears would be sterilized this fall,
with another 200-400 in the spring. The group plans to pick up the
estimated $10,000 tab, he added.
