THE Federal Government wants to do a deal with war-ravaged Iraq to take
54,000 Australian sheep, after negotiations with Pakistan collapsed.
The Iraqi port of Basra is being considered as a drop-off point for the
sheep aboard the MV Cormo Express.
It remains stranded 15km off the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf
- only a day's steaming time from Basra, in southern Iraq.
Cabinet yesterday decided the sheep should be offloaded quickly and not
slaughtered on board.
