A top official with the Canadian Wildlife Federation fears that, even if
found guilty, a man charged with the cruel treatment of a bear cub in the
Outaouais could receive nothing more than a fine in the bizarre incident.
Colin Maxwell, executive vice-president of the association, said yesterday
it is up to politicians and judges to put more teeth into the protection
of wildlife, saying Denis Ryan's alleged treatment of the cub dubbed Buddy
Bear is a textbook case of poaching.
