Here's something we didn't need to hear: We're fat and so are our pets. The
National Research Council reports that about one-fourth of dogs and cats are
obese, predisposing them to health problems.
The reasons? Too much food and too little exercise. And the solution is the
same: a better diet and more exercise. Dogs are easy, of course, but how do you
get a cat to work out?Pets in other Western nations have similar weight
problems. What a testament to the abundance of those societies that pets are in
danger from too much food rather than, as happens in dirt-poor backwaters like
North Korea, winding up as food.
