APPLICATION FOR HUGE HOG OPERATION PROMPTS ARSON
(Article synopsis from the 9/8 AnimalNet)
Stratford Beacon-Herald, Ian Cumming, September 6, 2003

During the night of Aug. 22 a Coverall barn full of hay owned by the Bedard
family near Ste-Anne-de-Prescott, according to this story, burned to the
ground. Natalie Bedard was cited as saying that found at the scene was a
soft, fabric doll with a pig's head along with two garbage cans, adding,
"It's
very horrible. It's incredible that people would do that." Steven Waite of
the Hawkesbury OPP was quoted as saying, "The pig is a piece of evidence, so
we cannot comment on it. The fire is still under
investigation with the fire marshal's office. People of interest are being
questioned."

The story explains that earlier this year the Bedard family had applied for
a building permit for a pig barn in their township of East Hawkesbury. Their
application was received at the township office just before council had
imposed a temporary moratorium on any pig barns being constructed in the
township. Being the application was filed prior to the moratorium, it was
reviewed but eventually denied. Large crowds had gathered at several
township meetings demanding it be turned down.
