[opinion from The Olympian]
In the first incident, a militant animal-rights group claimed
responsibility for releasing 10,000 mink from a fur farm about 40
miles northeast of Seattle. In the second incident, People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals accused the state Department of Fish and
Wildlife of violating the state's cruelty-to-animals statute.
The incidents are only tenuously related, in that in both cases men
and women acted on behalf of wildlife. But members of the public
should draw a sharp distinction between the way two animal-rights
activist organizations have demonstrated their passion and
compassion.
...
PETA officials acted responsibly in airing their concerns and making
sure wildlife officials lived up to their own policy. That policy
encourages the public to contact a licensed nuisance wildlife control
officer or an animal-control agency to deal with annoying animals.
Activists from the Animal Liberation Front who resorted to "terrorist
tactics" to release 10,000 mink give all animal activists a bad name.
That undermines the credibility of organizations like PETA, who have
legitimate concerns on occasion and raise them in a responsible
fashion.
