Women clad in skimpy showgirl-style outfits, complete with fake beaks and
plastic chicken feathers, handed out leaflets in front of a St. Vital KFC
restaurant yesterday to protest the treatment of chickens bought by the
fast food giant.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Virginia-based animal
rights heavyweight who organized yesterday's demonstration, claims KFC's
chicken suppliers abuse the birds by crippling, de-beaking and scalding
them, and raising them in disgusting conditions.

Both KFC and its suppliers adamantly deny the claims.

"Chickens go through the worst horrors of any animal raised for food,"
said Holly Fraser, campaign co-ordinator for PETA. "If the CEOs of KFC
were to treat a dog or a cat in this manner they'd be in jail."
