Animal-rights activists have spent the past three months harassing Bay
Area executives of drug-development giant Chiron Corp.
Spurred by the New Jersey-based group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty,
protesters have targeted Chiron employees in Orinda, Lafayette, Piedmont
and San Francisco since May.
The 4-year-old campaign was sparked by Huntingdon Life Sciences' use of
animals to test medicines. Chiron contracts with Huntingdon for such tests.
Protesters have left fake tombstones on executives' lawns and awakened
employees and their families at 3 a.m., police said. No permanent damage
has been inflicted, but some employees have changed their phone numbers
and called police several times.
