SONOMA -- Animal rights activists vandalized a new Sonoma Plaza
restaurant, also damaging two adjacent businesses, in what police called
an act of "domestic terrorism."

The break-in at Sonoma Saveurs, which was scheduled to open next month,
followed vandalism attacks last month at the homes of two of the
restaurant's three owners.

Animal rights activists, who object to the owners' ties to production of
foie gras -- a duck and goose liver delicacy -- posted accounts of last
month's attacks on two Internet sites.
The Animal Liberation Front, a decentralized, underground organization
operating worldwide, has been implicated in other acts of vandalism around
Sonoma County, including arson fires at a Santa Rosa chicken processing
plant and a meatpacking plant and an egg farm in Petaluma, as well as a
burglary at the Farm Bureau during the past several years.
