AR-News: N. Zealand beef herd `BSE-free'

WELLINGTON—Agriculture officials stressed yesterday that New Zealand's
beef herd is free of mad cow disease after a 26-year-old man was admitted
to hospital with a brain-wasting condition that could be linked to the
cattle disease.

Director of animal biosecurity, Derek Belton, said that even if the man
has the serious variant form of Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD), "that
would not reflect on the BSE-free status of New Zealand's livestock."
