Armed with a new federal regulation, states along the East Coast may now
take out permits to shoot mute swans to reduce the population of the
aggressive, invasive species.
Yesterday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service posted its new regulation on
the Federal Register after more than a month of gathering information
about the environmental impact of reducing the mute swan population from
17,000 to 3,000 on the East Coast over the next 10 years.
What this means for Massachusetts, where about 1,000 mute swans live, is
that permits issued to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Great
Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury are out of a temporary moratorium.
