A PATIENT possibly suffering from a brain-wasting illness linked to mad
cow disease is under observation in a New Zealand hospital, a government
official said Thursday.

Medical experts are divided over whether the patient is suffering from
Creutzfeld Jakob disease, the human variant of mad cow, which has caused a
handful of deaths in New Zealand.

The director of public health is expected to release a statement shortly
on whether the patient has the disease, a spokeswoman for Agriculture
Minister Jim Sutton said.

New Zealand, which has an economy heavily reliant on agriculture exports,
has never had a recorded case of mad cow disease, also known as bovine
spongiform encephalopathy. Those who have died of the illness here had
eaten infected meat while overseas.
