AR-News: (US) Deer spotted again on South Manitou Island

They’re back.

Whitetail deer have again found a way to cross the Lake Michigan moat
surrounding South Manitou Island, creating a threat to the island’s
bountiful plant life.

“In my opinion, we are going to have to get rid of them of they will alter
the vegetation on South Manitou Island just as they did on North Manitou,”
said Max Holden, resource specialist for the National Park Service.
He said that he knew of no complaints received by the Park Service after
the three deer were shot on South Manitou, but the animal rights
organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) did
protest previous efforts by park personnel to locate and eliminate them.
