For Dan Jerke, a Central High School student, it was an article in the
music magazine that caught his attention. The piece focused on a
California chef who ate what's called a raw diet and thrived on three or
four hours of sleep per night. That prospect of having more energy sounded
good to the 16-year-old and he's since forsaken his fast food and cola
lifestyle.
A raw diet isn't quite what it sounds like. The definition is interpreted
somewhat differently by raw eaters, but for Jerke and Cleberg raw means,
in essence, vegan. In other words, a cold meat sandwich is not a raw food.
Animal products are not included in their diets. Fruits and vegetables,
and the juices made from them, as well as nuts and seeds make up the raw
diet's offerings.
...
The two Aberdonians aren't alone. Nationwide, raw or vegan diets are
popular enough that, in metropolitan areas, there are restaurants
featuring only raw entrees. There's also a wealth of information available
on the Internet and in books.
...
A complete raw eater for the seven months since returning from vacation,
Jerke has come to subscribe to vegan morals and avoids animal foods and
products and has sympathy for animals.
...
Cleberg said people interested in a raw diet can contact him by calling
(605) 225-5941. Jerke suggested the following Web site: www.rawveganteen.com.
