REGINA -- Saskatchewan's agriculture minister says it's time to discuss
reducing the province's cattle herd by as much as 40 per cent, something
he believes the country may have no choice but to do.

"If, in fact, the borders are not open by the beginning of August to the
end of August, then we absolutely find ourselves in a situation where we
have to do restructuring of the industry," Clay Serby said in an interview

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which decimated Europe's cattle
market, surfaced May 20 in a single cow in Alberta.

More than 30 countries, including the United States, have since closed
their borders to Canadian beef, costing the cattle industry an estimated
$11 million a day in lost trade.
