Pietermaritzburg - Animal rights groups have reacted with horror at a
monkey hunt planned by south coast farmers at the weekend.
...
Under KZN nature conservation legislation, vervet monkeys and baboons
are not classed as vermin but are not protected, Ezemvelo legal
expert Mark Serfontein confirmed. However, no permit is needed if the
hunt takes place on private property.
Members of the KZN-based animal rights organisation Justice for
Animals have expressed outrage.
"We have a project, the Monkey Helpline, that has been assisting
people who have problems with monkeys for the past eight years, and
we have had much success," said project co-ordinator Steve Smit.
