AR-News: (US) Man Becomes First Busted Under New Animal Fighting Laws

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- A Sumter County man is the first in the state to
get busted under a tough new animal fighting law. Ross Johnson is behind
bars accused of running a cockfighting ring near Adamsville, south of
Wildwood.

"This is clearly an operation that's been in business several years," says
Capt. Gary Brannen, Sumter County Sheriff's Investigator.

But until two weeks ago, sheriff's deputies were virtually powerless to do
anything about illegal bird fighting rings like the one investigators say
was being run out of the backyard of a Sumter County home.
