Critics Blast Lowering of Missouri River

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In an effort to save endangered birds and fish, a federal judge ordered lower water levels on the Missouri River, a decision critics say will lead to lost revenues for barge companies and higher power prices for consumers who live along the river.

The lower reaches of the river through Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska will be too shallow for barge tows if flows are reduced to levels sought by conservation groups, critics said.
