[from Rocky Mountain News]

As the feline death toll mounted, the cat-owning public became more
nervous, convinced that its pets were being abducted, killed and mutilated
at the hands of sickos.

Eventually, 67 pets would fall victim before the spate of cat mutilations
in Tustin, Calif., in the summer of 1989 came to an end.

The parallels to the cat mutilations being investigated locally and in
Salt Lake City are apparent.
Lockwood, whose book, Forensic Investigation of Animal Cruelty: A Guide
for Veterinary and Law Enforcement Professionals, will be released next
year, says wounds from wild predators often appear to be human-caused,
even to trained eyes.
