The Wauconda Championship Rodeo organizers looked back on 40 years of
tradition to plan this weekend's event.
Cowboys and committee members from the first Wauconda rodeo will kickoff
competition by greeting the crowd in a stagecoach Friday through Sunday at
the Golden Oaks Equestrian Center at Route 12 and Case Road.
...
One infamous tradition is expected not to reoccur this year. An animal
rights group that has protested the rodeo in the past, does not plan to
protest this year.
...
Officials with Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK), an animal
rights group that has protested the rodeo in the past, says the group will
not protest in Wauconda. The group clashed with rodeo fans and local
police several times the past few years.
President Steve Hindi said the group has no specific plans for the "little
rodeo" in Wauconda. Instead, SHARK wants to challenge the "rodeo mafia,"
or the larger arena of rodeo and its supporters, instead of focusing on
the Wauconda rodeo that first inspired the group.
"We're dealing now with the whole cruelty family and Wauconda is just one
petty criminal," Hindi said.
Rodeo organizers think Hindi and his group might appear. O'Hara said the
group has the right to protest, but rodeo organizers will be on guard.
People are tired of the protesting, he said.
"We are mentally prepared for him," O'Hara said.
