AR-News: (CA/US) Canada threatens mad cow reprisal

Two top federal cabinet ministers sent a stern message south Friday,
warning Canada could block imports of American cattle unless the U.S.
swiftly opens its border to Canadian beef.

The retaliatory threat echoes Alberta Premier Ralph Klein's call Thursday
to consider a ban on all beef imports to protect a domestic cattle
industry devastated by the mad cow crisis.

In Calgary on Friday, Finance Minister John Manley said if diplomatic
efforts to lift the American beef ban are unsuccessful, Canada might raise
regulatory standards for imports of beef and cattle. This would
effectively block U.S. beef from entering Canada.
