'Lucky' the pup survives slaughter: Jogger makes
gruesome animal discovery
By Chris Durant The Times-Standard
BLUE LAKE -- Her seven brothers and sisters are gone,
victims of hideous deaths, but one puppy may live a
full life, thanks to a jogger who rushed it to an
emergency veterinarian Tuesday evening.
Blue Lake City Councilman Sherman Schapiro was out for
a jog before Tuesday's City Council meeting when he
heard some rustling in some bushes and stopped. He
discovered what he thought at the time was an entire
litter of eight puppies, all of which had been killed.
"There was blood everywhere around the puppies,"
Schapiro said.
He said he was late for the meeting, but returned to
the site afterward to retrieve the animals for burial.
He discovered that one puppy had crawled a short
distance away and was still alive.
He took all the puppies to the Myrtle Avenue
Veterinary Hospital in Eureka where Dr. Joy Beaudet
performed emergency surgery on the one that was still
alive.
The puppies were determined to be either border collie
or McNab and about 6 weeks old.
Some of the pups had been shot; others had their
throats cut. At least one had its skull crushed.
Veterinary hospital personnel named the surviving
female Lucky. It is believed that a bullet grazed her
belly and shattered a back leg. A specialist will look
at Lucky today to determine if the leg can be saved.
The dogs were described as light brown, dark brown and
black. McNabs are a shepherd breed.
Schapiro said he thought about adopting the puppy
himself.
"But I already have two dogs," Schapiro said.
Schapiro helped set up donations for Lucky's medical
bills, which can be made at the pet hospital. For more
information call the hospital at 443-8686.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to
call the Blue Lake Police Department at 668-5895.
