[from San Jose Mercury News]

Although it's beginning to attract the attention of academics, animal
hoarding is not yet well-studied or understood.

Gary Patronek, director of the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy
at Tufts University, is leading the push for more research. He has formed
a group, the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium, that tackles these
issues.

According to HARC, animal hoarders go beyond owning more than a typical
number of animals. Besides that, they fail to provide enough food,
cleaning and veterinary care. Hoarders also fail to deal with
deterioration in the animals, and they don't recognize the negative impact
of the hoarding on their own well-being.
