Western ire grew Thursday as farmers and politicians angrily reacted to a
suggested interprovincial ban on Alberta beef and a perceived lack of
interest from Prime Minister Jean Chretien over the economic fallout from
one animal's mad cow infection.
"This is so asinine," feedlot operator Walter Schmidt said from Barrhead,
Alta., where 400 of his cattle remain under quarantine.
Another 177 calves Schmidt purchased from the owner of the infected cow
have already been slaughtered, and were cleared of exposure to the
brain-wasting disease.
