The 700 level was empty, the artificial turf athlete-free. Yet the tension
at Veterans Stadium on that spring weekend was as thick as the foam on a
concession-stand draft. That and this report from The Philadelphia
Inquirer's Julie Stoiber
After months of combing game schedules, watching the weather, and drafting
a support team, a trio of cat fans entered the stadium ready to settle a
question that had animal activists on the edge of their seats:
Could the Vet's wild cat population, which lately had been causing phones
to ring at national animal rights organizations, be rescued, neutered and
relocated before the cavernous sports complex went boom?
...
"It's very political," one of the rescuers said in declining to have her
name used.
Stadium personnel initially wouldn't discuss the cats, referring inquiries
to the Department of Recreation, which referred them to the Mayor's Press
Office, which did not respond to requests for comment.
...
All of which makes animal advocates cringe over the thought of strays
scavenging to survive and breeding unchecked, adding to overpopulation.
"It's a huge problem," said Becky Robinson, national director of Alley Cat
Allies, a Washington group that arranged the rescue at the Vet. "We don't
know how many stray and feral cats there are, but truly there are millions."
...
PETA wrote to Mayor Street. When the group got no response, it posted an
"Action Alert" in late March on its Web site, urging animal activists to
pepper city officials with save-the-cats pleas.
