[from Enterprise-Record]

Thu May 8 03:00:22 2003 -- The FBI is investigating whether an e-mail sent
to the Chico Enterprise-Record claiming responsibility for the attempted
firebombing at Wittmeier Auto Center is legitimate.
...
The anonymous note to the Enterprise-Record, filled with typographical
errors, claimed the action was a protest against SUVs as "death machines,"
"gas hogs" and an "elite status symbol for the upper class." The note also
ranted against capitalists and Republicans.
...
His office will attempt to track the source of the e-mail.

In an earlier attempted firebombing of a McDonald's on Mangrove Avenue, a
note was left at the Chico News & Review claiming the Animal Liberation
Front was responsible. In that incident, the note was left within minutes
of the device's discovery.
